Floral Design Workshop with Ariella Chezar in Sonoma, CA

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Treat yourself to a unique opportunity working with one of the best floral designers in the business, Ariella Chezar, in an upcoming workshop in beautiful Sonoma, California. This three-day workshop, from June 12th- 14th, will teach students how to arrange centerpiece flowers using Ariella’s signature compote, the process of creating a soft cascading bridal bouquet and wedding garlands, and finally how to create an overall event concept and and environment.

Below, Ariella describes the impact of this event, what students will learn, and how they will expand upon their skills:

“During the three days, participants will be immersed in my design style and sense of color using flowers that I love. One day will focus on centerpieces, the next on bridal flowers, and the third on what comes into play when conceiving of a whole event. We will take inspiration from two life size design boards, (which will be designed in collaboration with Kathryn Storke whose blog Snippet and Ink is known for it’s gorgeous color boards) one for a modern, and one for a romantic design. La Tavola Linens and Classic Party Rentals are donating their products, so there will be a great selection of rentals for students to incorporate into the designs.  Students will come away with understanding my approach to creating bridal bouquets and centerpieces as well as my technique for layering colors tone and tone.”

Event Design Series with Bideawee at Gotham Hall

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Gotham Hall

Bideawee, one of the most well recognized animal rights organizations in the country, has graciously partnered up FSNY for their upcoming gala event on Monday, June 11th at the beautiful Gotham Hall. Bideawee has invited FSNY to use the event as a learning opportunity where our students will design and execute the table decor and flower arrangements for the entire event.

Under the guidance of event designer David M Handy, students who register for June’s “Consultation to Execution” event design series will be able to participate in this one of a kind class, and will gain first-hand experience producing and designing a real event. This will be unlike anything offered at FlowerSchool before, and we are especially grateful to Bideawee for providing this unique opportunity for our students.

Upon completion, students will receive high-resolution images of their designs for their personal portfolios. To register for this series CLICK HERE.

Internship at Kat Flower

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011
Kat Hyppolite, of Kat Flower, recently contacted FlowerSchool New York eagerly looking for an intern who can help her in all elements of her flower shop, is willing to learn and excited about floral design.

The ideal candidate should love to be around flowers in all its states, be intelligent, very dependable and proactive, in that order, be willing and able to sometimes work in the early hours of the morning and weekends.  You should be quick, strong and coordinated, i.e. no awkward carrying of vases, centerpieces, love weddings, events, cookies, Brooklyn, people, sweeping, sunshine, washing vases and changing vase water because you’ll be doing all of that and more.

The position is unpaid but in true FlowerSchool fashion, Kat promises to teach you everything she knows about flowers.  The ideal candidate will be available 2-3 days a week; one of which will most definitely be a weekend day.  If you are interested, or know anyone who might be, feel free to email Kat at kathleen@katflower.com with a brief resume and be sure to include internship in the subject line.

Decorating New York City

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Have you ever wondered who is in charge  of plantings, greens, lobby decoration and holiday cheer?

Now that I have been connected with the floral industry for the past 6 years, the industry as a whole never ceases to amaze me.  There are an unlimited number of avenues to explore that involve floral design skills. You just have to know where to look for opportunities.

On that note, FlowerSchool recently received a call from Lynn Angeloro, the Director of Human Resources at John Mini Distinctive Landscapes. She is looking for a few qualified applicants and is hoping that we might know of some people looking to break into the design business.  An eye for design, and floral design in particular is a must.  Please CLICK HERE for the Holiday Supervisor position and CLICK HERE for the Management position.

Stay tuned to our “Decorating New York City” entry as they are coming to FlowerSchool next week for a meet and greet and possibly a collaboration.  Will keep you informed.

British Virgin Islands Florist Wanted

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

A FlowerSchool New York alumna has opened a successful business in the British Virgin Islands and she is hiring.  It was logical  for her to look for someone by contacting FlowerSchool, where students leave with a strong foundation in technique and design.

Her name is Linette Baa, a former Miss BVI, who came to New York and studied at FlowerSchool several years ago. Her business is called Bella Blooms and it is located in Tortola, BVI. Linette is looking for someone who knows about floral care, conditioning and designing. She said that though the pay is not high it might be a good job for someone who wants to experience living in another country.  She is willing to help a good candidate look for housing and can also assist with a work permit which usually takes two weeks.

If you think this might be for you, please email Linette at  linsmith@hotmail.com.
