Spring Update

We are halfway through our Peony Project Master Class Series and as a result FlowerSchool NY has been looking especially beautiful!

Shane Connolly kicked off our Peony Project Series on April 20th with a beautiful design of seasonal lilac, huge cherry blossoms and gardenia peonies. The studio was awash with purple blooms and smells of Spring. Shane also taught students his coveted method of hand-wiring wedding bouquets. He used a beautiful toffee colored palette of Belle Epoque tulips, hyacinth, seeded eucalyptus, ruscus and hellebore.

Gotham magazine were here to document the day. You can see their feature HERE.

Shane’s visit ended with a celebration of his newest book “The Secret Meaning of Flowers: Love Lost, Love Found, Love Restored.” In this book Shane introduces the lost art of Floriography to a modern audience, using love as the starting point.

On April 27th, Oscar Mora used a colorful, bright and bold palette for his Peony Project Master Class. He produced an incredible large scale arrangement using large pink peonies, spirea, burgundy calla lilies and lilac. Students then made their own arrangements using huge peonies of shade of pink a well as lilac and green viburnum.

Ariella taught a beautiful class on May 4th showcasing a monochromatic palette of soft yellows and cream using peonies, spirea and daffodils from, Zonneveld, Ariella’s personal flower farm in upstate New York. The designs were light, airy and full of movement. Gemma and Andrew Ingalls, authors of In Full Flowerincorporated these designs for their first FlowerSchool NY class “Flower Photography” the following day. We look forward to welcoming Ariella back to FlowerSchool NY to teach more classes in Summer – details to follow soon!

The Peony Project with Sullivan Owen

Thursday, June 1st

Sullivan Owen— our first alumna to become a FlowerSchool New York Master Florist— creates incredibly innovative and capturing floral designs for some of the most recognized and celebrated brands such as Hermes or Saks Fifth Avenue. Having years of experience in visual merchandising and store environment design, Sullivan brings a unique perspective and understanding to her work.

In this class, Sullivan Owen will demonstrate her floral approach that is always deeply thought out, sculptural and balanced. Her background in store display design coupled with her natural affinity for creating lush soft arrangements makes her the ideal person to give us a new way to look at peonies in this class.

The Peony Project with Bella Meyer of fleursBella
Thursday, June 15th
5:00pm – 7:00pm

Bella Meyer brings her unique vision to her art of flower design. As the granddaughter of Marc Chagall, she grew up having flowers and art intertwined. Her flower designs reflect this sensibility as she draws from paintings, the theater and the natural world in order to create beauty for her clients.

Almost the summer solstice and the longest day of the year, this class features the magical hand of Bella Meyer whose artistic qualities are always evident in the designs she does for the New York City Ballet, the Jewish Museum and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In this class she will beguile us with her magic as she creates a peony arrangement that is unusual, artistic and design forward.
