Liza Lubell, Florist and Founder of Garbage Goddess, Guest Speaker

Garbage Goddess is a New York based eco-cleanup solution to the trash left behind by traditional event breakdowns. Garbage Goddess donates used decor and composts organic waste, diverting trash from landfills. Founded by florist Liza Lubell (New York’s Peartree Flowers) in 2019, Liza has spent over fifteen years producing and dismantling events. Disillusioned by the amount of waste that her industry created, Liza realized she could no longer work with florals unless she meaningfully shifted the industry towards earth-supportive practices. During one particularly large-scale event, Liza and her team diverted a heroic amount of organic material (over three tons) from the landfill to the composting center. The seed for Garbage Goddess was planted, and Peartree Flowers hasn’t worked any other way since. By creating a separate breakdown service for the larger event community, Liza has demonstrated that Garbage Goddess is not a niche concept, but a thriving and scalable business that is essential and urgent. “We should all keep celebrating, but beautiful events create tons of destructive methane-emitting landfill waste, contributing to our urgent climate crisis. Calvert Crary, Program Instructor

Calvert Crary is the Executive Director of both FlowerSchool New York and FlowerSchool Los Angeles, and author of Flower School: A Practical Guide to the Art of Flower Arranging (Nov 2020). An internationally recognized instructor and mentor, Calvert has taught programs across the United States, Holland, Mexico and Australia, and was this year’s judge for the prestigious PHS Philadelphia Flower Show. Calvert has trained and coached thousands of students on how to work in the floral industry with top designers, start new businesses, or reorganize existing floral businesses into thriving careers.

PROGRAM DETAILS -

The 30-hour Certificate in Event Design Program is for florists, caterers, event planners or anyone designing entire events as a profession or party enthusiast. Students will spark their creativity, learn how to make their visions come to life by establishing workflows, project management fundamentals and industry tricks to bring a fully-planned event to fruition. In this simulated project management course, we will show you how to design, plan, produce and project manage events from start to finish.  *Note: this course is 30% lecture and 70% hands-on active design and production

Students will:

•  Be led by the FlowerSchool & ILA Team

• Meet your hypothetical clients and learn how to ask the right questions

• Learn the entire design and planning process including:

  • Selling Your Services and how to price them

  • Building Vendor Relationships and Timeline Management

  • Budgets & Contracts 

  • Building Your Event Timeline & Run of Show

  • Designing food & beverage menus

  • Event Design & Tablescaping

  • Presentation Tools

    • Canva, Be Merri and others

• Bring home industry documents for professional/personal use, exclusive discounts on industry-leading software, build a design trunk with lifetime refresh of new collections, inspiring books written by leading industry professionals, and other takeaways!

Throughout the week, classes will include presentations by industry professionals giving advice and reflections from their years of experience in the business. 

At the end of this program, students will produce a real-life event! It is your job to create the best event possible as per the client’s interests while staying within budget.

• Mood/Story Boarding for entire event

• Unlock Proposals, Budgets, Production Timeline, Design Plans, & Layouts

• Build menus & cocktail lists

• Meet with the client for approval

Wednesday (10:30am - 4:00pm):

• Floral Production Day!

  • Learn some basic event floral skills and design for the eveng

Thursday (10:30am - 4:00pm):

• Event Production Day!

  • Prep tables, linens, votives, lighting

  • Finalize documents and tie all the bows!

Friday AM (10:30am - 1:00pm) :

• Dive into Budgets, Vendor Relations, Contracts & Fees

• Graduation!

Friday PM (5:00pm - 8:00pm):

• Event Time!
